Title: Despicable me 4
By: Illumination
Language: English (+cc)
Type: 3D animation
Genre: action/family
Length: 1h25
Release date:

Where: on Netflix
(actually on Prime it's paywalled, not part of the basic subscription, oops; streamed on my laptop
at the library the very day before it got taken off)

Oh no Gru's family has to go into witness protection because his old academy rival is explicitly coming after all of them! and in their new town someone immediately pierces his secret and blackmails him!

It was fun! I loved Poppy and I wish her all the luck.

However I found really really jarring, even more than in the previous installment, than the girls are not allowed to grow up when passage of time has been made so evident. It costs too much to update models? fan recognition is important? Bah! executives are just lazy, yeah.

actually everything is on an incline

I think I've planted everything from the last plant sale, which is not technically a prerequisite for attending the next one but it's a helpful baseline. Since the groundhog in the rock garden out back is awake again and there's suddenly a bunny living under our front porch, I changed my phlox plans and got a bunch more nasturtium and marigold seeds.

I did put one phlox in the back garden--surrounded by nasturtium seedlings--but the others went out on the fence where there's less cover for smol wildlife. (Don't worry, there's still plenty for the bunny to eat in the front garden next to the porch. It's already mowed down the dicentra and woodland phlox and is starting on the columbine.) A neighbor also pointed out some forget-me-nots growing in the brush pile, so I dug them out and installed half out back and half in front.

I planted the potentilla and roses in the dogwood garden as planned, and at the same time dug up a bunch of volunteer rose campion, plus some soapwort and mugwort, on the assumption that they are unkillable enough to possibly survive in the roadside garden, which is where I transplanted them to last night by the glow of Marci's headlamp. (Why have I taken over the roadside garden, you might ask, especially if you knew how far away it is and how poor the conditions are: because no one else would, and it has been languishing for years.)

Favorite sources with canon poly / Favorite sources for headcanoned poly. Tell us all about that media that makes poly shipping fun!

Only canon poly today!

* Fairy tales and legends: more of them are good for poly that you'd imagine. My fave fairy tales with a canon OTP ending are Gold-tree and Silver-tree and Princess Badoura

* Some webcomics! The first I read was Chester 5000 XYV, an erotic steampunk story where the first part had a love triangle that didn't end up happily, and I was so happy when the second arc ended in a happy OT3!
And then there was Muted, that ends up with the main witch girl escaping her abusive family supported by her two girlsfriends. And Love me to Death, wher a necromancer is hired by a rich man to resurrect his girlfriend, and ends up part of their story when she comes back, but with a soulbond to him.

* Fantasy books! I loved N.K. Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, where god romances work by triads; only two of them, and there's risk for the balance to be broken. And also Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy, when the main girl is a sex worker and has a main love interest but it doesn't stop her from having feelings and sex with quite a few other people.

* TV shows! Everyone already mentioned Sense8, which is perfect for poly, and there was also talk about Our Flag means death, which had very good poly setting in s1 but didn't keep all its promises in s2. But I also want to mention Black Sails, where the poly relationships are as tragic as the not-poly ones but they're diverse and they really work well. When we see Miranda and Flint in the first season, I was like, they're too intimate to be exes, too bitter to be friends with benefits, not intimate enough for lovers, what are they exactly, and when it was revelead they were in a poly relationship with the same guy and avenging him together it was perfect, and there's also Jack/Anne/Max, and the outright fail that is Eleanor/Max and Eleanor/Vain in s1, but romantic and jealousy is never the problem (they have a lot of other problems).

Saw an indigo bunting for the first time ever! Planted the little blueberries, speedwell, and bunched leaf penstemon in the lower rock garden. (Everything is blue now.) I definitely don't need any more mini roses* but I found another packet of nasturtium seeds at the hardware store, and those won't come amiss. Completed week 1 of my "watch 2 hours of Chinese video a day" challenge.

*My next post will probably be, "So I got some more mini roses."

Called the vet about non-emergency dental work for Daphne; she will call back tomorrow. Is it even possible to safely sedate this dog enough that she can be anesthetized? Someone managed it, because she was spayed after being picked up by animal control. But I am not convinced and would like the professional opinion of someone who has seen how difficult she is to handle, preferably while looking at the medical records from her second shelter intake, which indicate she received four different sedatives and still had to be muzzled.

Titre : Les grandes oubliées de l'Histoire Pourquoi l'Histoire a effacé les femmes
Auteures : Titiou Lecoq & Marie Dubois
Langue : français
Type : essai graphique
Genre : vulgarisation historio-sociologique

1ère parution : 2025
Édition : L'iconoclase
Format : 230 page

Why does modern history minimize or even erases women? yes this take is Euro- and French-centric because the authors are French women but surely there are equivalent elsewhere?

1) Today has been one of those "what is the point of anything" kind of days, but my current language challenge involves watching a lot of videos, which is sometimes doable even with a very low level of motivation, so I was watching one on emptiness and it inspired me to get up and steam some vegetables for dinner. (The guy is clearly selling something, but that doesn't make him wrong.) And when I was moving around I was like, "Wait, isn't this how I always feel three days before my period?" So I checked Garmin which hasn't synced in weeks and it was like, "Your period will start in three days."

being self-aware )

2) I've been enjoying everyone's posts about their life and times so much; it makes me want to share my own as a way of returning the favor. When I don't feel like posting I'll be like, "well, [this person] posted and that made me happy, so I guess I'll post too." It's nice.

3) The other day I meant to say, "if it's worth doing it's worth doing badly," but now I can't remember why. Oh, wait, typing that made me remember! When you care enough to cheat.

There's lots of helpful applications of the "it's worth doing badly" idea, from learning new skills to practicing something you've forgotten to awkwardly trying to do more than nothing in any situation that seems to call for it, even when you don't know what the best thing is. I have a magnet that says "just because you can't do everything doesn't mean you can't do anything." It's worth it to try even when you already know it won't be perfect, because A) plenty of imperfect things are wonderful ("two cakes!") B) almost all imperfect things are better than nothing, and C) making imperfect things can help you make better things (and/or make things better).

what even is cheating )

Anyway, that's Sunday for me.

Kill Your Darlings by Lou Wilham was awesome! It's Book 3 of Hunters of Ironport, an achillean story inspired by Buffy/Faith.

This is my favourite series in the Bay of the Dead Verse. This tome has a major crossover with Witches of Moondale, a minor one with Fae of Eventide, and introduces Bat who, as I guessed, will be the protagonist of History Will Call Them Tombmates. Here's the full Reading Order.

There's major m/m/m, where one of them is a trans man, and minor f/f.

What are your favorite poly tropes/dynamics? What classic tropes do you like to see with poly ships? Are there any tropes you like seeing subverted or added to in some way with poly ships?

Oooh, good question.

I love competence kink when it's a good combination of already skilled people working even better together, I'm gonna ship this. I have a weakness for when they're nerds in different fields, but they don't have to be.

"A and B both love C so much that they find common ground to help/save C, as friendship or shipping, overcoming jealousy" is really one of my faves.

For angst, I love any "A loves B more, B loves C more and C loves A more but they're trying to make it work" situations.

I love weird supernatural situations. A and B are soulbonded and when A falls for C B doesn't know if their attraction for C is theirs? A and B are sharing a body and a partner? Yeah I'm all for it.

spring is plant sale season

We had a frost warning the last two nights, but "frost free" or our last average frost date is coming up next week. Spring is here!

Since I have plenty of plants already, there is no need for me to acquire more. Fortunately my sister told me about the following tumblr meme: "Don't let anyone tell you not to spend $25 on plants. That $75 will be the best $300 you've ever spent."

Then she came with me to our first plant sale of the season, guarded plants while I paid and got the car, and carried not one but four bags of compost ♥

bunch of flowers )

PS, This was my first time attending a fundraising plant sale sponsored by a nursery. Highly recommend.

PPS, Do you see the innocent looking green sprig behind the pink flowers on the left? That's a palm tree. Someday I will not have room to overwinter plants indoors because the entire lower level of our house will be filled with trees. "The forest floor," I'll call it.

1. What do you consider your current main fandom?
Mo Dao Zu Shi and The Untamed

I thought about saying "learning Chinese," and when I saw that the question explicitly included hobbies and collecting I thought about gardening. But media is still my first thought when it comes to fannish activity, and to be fair I probably love Mo Dao Zu Shi more than either learning Chinese or gardening.

2. What was your first fandom?
Star Trek

My dad is a Star Trek fan and he shared it with us, so Star Trek is easily the first fannish love I remember. I still have Star Trek fanfic I wrote when I was eight. Marci and I got tiny tribbles at a convention and made them the main characters in a dollhouse our grandfather built for us. Smokey was black and Butterball was cat-yellow.

3. Do you have any favorite headcanons or fan theories?
Fox spirit Wei Ying with dragon Lan Zhan is Chinese fanon, supported by donghua producer Ten Cent and official art. This is my favorite beyond-canon characterization I can think of.

4. Have you ever created fanworks?
A few. Arguably everything I do is a fanwork; I certainly think of it that way.

5. Are you still active in any old fandoms?
I must be coming up on my fortieth anniversary as a Star Trek fan, and I still write Star Trek fanfic. Even Star Trek/Mo Dao Zu Shi fusions.
